British entrepreneurs start dog food subscription brand in Hong Kong

Two British entrepreneurs have started Buddy Bites, a local startup in door-to-door dog food delivery, using the city as the launch pad to sell and deliver its own branded kibble through a direct to consumer model in wake of the pandemic.

Co-founded by two dog lovers Mr Ryan Black and Mr Chris Lee, Buddy Bites offers not only hassle-free convenience with door-to-door delivery of its own kibble, which is produced in Europe and formulated by Hong Kong vets, but also a network that enables customers a way to give back to the Hong Kong dog community, donating 1kg of Buddy Bites to local dog shelters, for every 2kg delivered to customers.

Mr Black said, “We recognised the needs of a subscription-based dog food delivery service in Hong Kong for both dog owners and shelters, especially during the pandemic. The city also has a very close-knit community of dog owners, a huge portion of whom have adopted from shelters in the city. When we worked out a model to marry both convenience with a route to give back to shelters, Hong Kong is the perfect market.”

He added, “We are a super young startup, and Hong Kong provides a perfect testing ground for a brand that we believe has the potential to be multinational. Currently we are fine tuning the best possible products by using the direct to consumer model. It allows us to collect accurate feedback on our products and services through quality interaction with customers. We aim to grow a significant market share in Hong Kong and use it as a launch pad into other Asian cities.”
